RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before M. Pi ice, Esq., R. M.) Fiunvv, Kirn January. Diii'Nkknxkss. — John Curphcy, charged with this offence, was found guilty and fined in ss. and costs. Thomas Smith was also mulcted in a crown for the same offence.
Saturday, 17tii January. There were no cases before the Court to-day-Inkhkiates.— Philip Hayes failed to appear and answer the charge of being drunk, so £2, which he had left as pledge, were declared foif'eited. Augustus Strode, accused of the same offence, maintained that he was not drunk, and the evidence of a constable to the contrary, insisted on arguing the point with his Worship, who cut the matter short by imposing a fine of one pound. Mr. Strode was removed, narrowly escaping a charge of contempt of Court. Ousi-kne Lan<;vac.e. — Joseph Anderson, "mate" of Augustus Sti\:de, was charged with using obscene language in Tay-strcct on Sunday night. Prisoner stoutly denied the c. a "gc, but the evidence of the constable was conclusive to the Magistrate, who imposed a penalty of £1, and accused left the dock, evidently considering that he had been grossly ill-tised. BiiKAoii of Ckrtii-'icate. — A. MD. Campion, of the Albion Hotel, was accused of having had his licensed house open for the sale of spirits at 10.35 p.m. cm the loth inst. Mr. Cameron pleaded not guilty. A constable deposed to entering the place at that time, when he found the bar lit up, two nieu inside of it, and one outside drinking from a glass. Another constable corroborated these particulars, but both were so coiiiiiced about tl'c position of doors and entries in the place, that the Magistrate dismissed the case. Mr. Cameron wished to give evidence himself, but he was told it could not then be received.
