CANTERBURY.
Timaru Races. — The Committees of Jockey Clubs do not seem in the habit of consulting the Church Almanac. The Timaru Races have to be postponed in consequence of the day having been originally fixed for Ash Wednesday. A somewhat similar mistake occurr,! in fixing the day for the Canterbury Races a few years back. The Harvest. — The harvest has begun in some parts of the Province, and reaping will soon be general. At Leithfield, on the Kowai, wheat has been already cut and stacked, and the reaping machine is busy in the neighborhood. Had the windmill been at work, as expected, new flour might have been in the market, a matter of some consequence, as we hear that as much as £18 has been offered and ref used for flour in that district, and that there is not sufficient water to turn the other mills. Musical. — Madame Carandini and her company continue to take our settlers' cash in exchange for their notes, and all parties seem to be satisfied with the transaction — especially the public. On Thursday the lady makes a special appeal at the Town Hall, Chiistchurch, for a benefit. We have frequently heaad these gifted artistes, and must say that at our last visit, on Monday night, Madame Carandini sang with a freshness and brilliancy superior to any of her previous performances in Christchurch. -The Canterbury Musical Society are preparing a grand treat for Monday next, a promenade concert in Barnard 's Leviathan Repository, which is
given and illuminated for the occasion Hi. „ . g spirited proprietor to ,aid the, funds <« society.— Lyttcltoh IHjiies,- \ B -
