CANTERBURY.

By the Titania we have Canterbury papers to December 11. We extract the following: —

Genekal Hoxidat. — Tuesday next, the 16th instant, being the anniversary of the foundation of the Canterbury settlement, will be observed as a general holiday. The government and public offices, the banks, &c., will be closed on that day, and the usual ball will take place in the evening, at the town hall, Christchurch. — Standard, December 11th.

False Repoet. — We learn that the rumours which have been for some time afloat in Christchurch, to the effect that a carpenter named Robert Hall had been drowned, are without foundation. He lost his way in the bush and remained there for seven days, almost without food, and from exposure and other causes temporarily lost his reason. It is believed that with care and attention his health may be restored.

Fatal Accident.— A little boy named Mace, a^ed about seven years, was playing oil the Government Wharf at Lyttelton, a few days ago, when unfortunately he fell off the pier and was drowned. His body was found fioating in* the water the day subsquent to the one on which the accident occurred. — Ibid*

The death of a waterman in Port Lyttelton took place this week under the following circumstances : The unfortunate man, whose name was Taylor, was confined temporarily in Lyttelton gaol, as he was suffering at the time from delirium cum tremore occasioned by excessive drinking. Ho was placed in a warm bath, when death ensued from a rush of blood to the head.— lbid.
