NAVIGATION OF LAKE WAIKATIP

On Tuesday afternoon, a meeting of gentlemen favorable to the formation of an association, having for its object the navigation of Lake Waikatip, consequent upon the discovery of gold in that neighborhood, was held at the Prince of Wales Hotel. The room tt'ns well filled, there being a s'rong muster of the mercantile and squatting: interest. Amons those present we observed Mr. P. L. Francis. Mr. Heale, Mr. C. N. Campbell, Mr. VV. H Pearson, Mr. Beavan, Mr. Lowe, Mr. J. Blacklock, and Mr. W. Stuart, who acted as secretary, pro tun. \ Mr. Francis, on being called Jo the ' chair, stated that the object of the present meeting was to elicit the opinon of those favorable to the formation of an asssociiiton. having for its object the navigation of Lake Wa'katip, and dwelt at some length on the importance of the question, and of the nece* iiy there existed for the people of Southland at once taking act'on in the mutter. Various speakers followed in the saint* strflin,allconcurringin the objects of theassueiation. It was then suggested, as a preiminary step, to purchase at once, a small vessel, capable of *carry ing seven or eight tons of cargo, besides pas>«ngers. have it immediately conveyed to the Lake, and placed in charge of an experienced seaman. This, it was calculated, could be accomplished with an outlay of about half the already subscribed capital of the association, leaving a good balance tow-aids uivinsr a bonus for building, if deemed expedient, a large vessel on the shores of the lake itself. The following resolutions were then carried unanimously J— 1. That an Association be formed for the purpose"of opening up the navigation of the. Waikutip Lake. 2. That additional subscriptions be raised for the above purpose. 3. 1 hat ths operations of the Association be tentative only in the meantime, with the view of ultimately, if need l>e< earning out more extended operations, with a different constitution. <4. That a Sub-Committee, consUtintj of Messrs. Francis, VV. Stuart, J. Blacklock, and Beaven, be appointed to purchase a suitable boat for the navigation of the Waikutip Lake — see it carted U|> at onr-e — and make any arrangement for its being efficiently -worked at the lowest payable rate. 6. That the Sub-Committee appointed un^er Resolution 4 be instructed that any arrangements to be made by them should involve no liability on th« part of the shareholders, nor have a view to immediate profit to the shareholders.
