Advances to Settlers.
“ Money at five per cent., aiid thirty-six and a half years to pay it in,” to quote a brief definition of one of the Government measures passed into law last session, has proved, in theatrical phrase, “ a big draw.” We learn that about 500 applications, averaging £3OO each, haye already been received, and it is anticipated that the million sterling now available will be all lent out within the first six months. The loans will range from £25 to £2,500. The Board will have to sit night and day for the first month, so that in their case the words “ Government stroke ” will be meaningless. The bill had anything but a fair weather passage through the Assembly, but in these days success is the great test of merit, and if the effect of the Act is to give an impetus to settlement, while at the same time the new department is
so worked that colonial finance's do not suffer, the Government will be able to justify tbeir latest venture in. the way of experimental legislation.
