Our town has been designated “ Sleepy Hollow ” on several occasions, and had those who so termed it been here on Friday week (Gore show day) they would have found ample justification. What with the large number of our citizens 'who went to the show and the closing of the shops the place had a deserted look—more the appearance of Sunday than a week-day. The yearly meeting of the Mataura Annual Picnic Promoters was held on Monday evening —Mr Balneaves in the chair. The balance-sheet showed a credit of I6s lOd. As there were only about half-a-dozen gentlemen present it was decided that the picnic be allowed to lapse for want of public interest. Messrs A. Balneaves and 0. S. Shanks were appointed to hold all the property belonging to the picnic in trust until such time as the public elect a new committee. The second match (300 yards) of the competition for Mr McNab’s trophy was fired on Wednesday afternoon. The following gained points : Mr Connor, Ist, 5 points ; Dr Hendry, 2nd, 4 points ; Mr Cameron, 3rd, 3 points ; Mr Mitchell, 4th, 2 points; and Mr A. Balneaves, sth, 1 point. A team of Mataura cricketers journejmd to Gore on Wednesday and played, against a team of the Gore cricketers and were put through by 37 runs on the first innings, the scores being—Gore 79. and 92, and Mataura 42 runs in their second innings, there being no time for them to go in again. The poor display of our cricketers was due to the fact that they could not muster a very good second-rate team, there being only six of the first eleven able to get away. For the past week the weather has been exceptionally warm. Although it has not reached “ 105 in the shade ” yet, still some of our people are crying out about the heat. Not so with me, as I rather enjoy it. During Wedneseay night we had a fine rain, which has freshened everything up.
