DUNEDIN MARKETS.

The markets are thus reported on for the week ended sth inst: —

Pat. Cattle. —206 head were yarded, about half of which were prime, and the balance medium to fair quality. Prices were about the same as last week. Best bullocks brought from £9 to £lO 17s 6d ; medium, £7 to £8 10s ; light weights, £5 to £6 10s ; best cows from £6 17s 6d to £9 ss; medium, £5 to £6 10s. Fat sheep were in very full supply, 3607 being penned, of which 300 were merinos. With the exception of a few pens, all were shorn, and on account of the supply being much in excess of trade requirements, prices showed a drop of from Is 6d to 2s per head. Crossbred wethers in the wool sold from 14s to 15s, shorn up to 14s ; ewes in wool up to 14s, shorn from 12s to 13s 6d; medium quality, from 10s to 11s; merino wethers, 8s to 9s 6d. Grain.—Wheat : The low price of flour locally and the dispiriting reports of the state of the market at Home are having their effect on values here, though prices are no lower for prime samples ; yet when medium wheat is offered values at least 2d to per bushel less have to be accepted, owing, doubtless, to the fact that millers are fairly well supplied, and are therefore not dependent on the few daily offerings. Fowls’ wheat is scarce, and meets with a ready sale. At the same time the market on the whole is void of animation. Quotations : For prime milling velvet, 2s 9d to 2s lOd ; medium to good do and best Tuscan, 2s 8d to 2s 9d; good to best red wheat, 2s 7d to 2s 8d ; medium do, 2s 6d to 2s 7d ; inferior to good whole fowlf’ 'wheat, 2s 3d to 2s 6d ; broken and musty, Is 9d to 2s 2d (ex store, sacks weighed in, terms.) Oats : The demand during the past week has been slightly brisker, resulting in somewhat better prices being obtained for all sorts. The advance, certainly, is not much, but is indicative of the tone of the tone of the market, which is a good deal firmer. Transactions are mainly confined to the filling of coastal and local orders. Stocks are now down to very small dimensions, and with the limited arrivals sellers arc in rather a better position, the market being slightly more in their favour, the probability being that a further small rise may be reckoned on before long. Meantime, we quote prime milling Is 4£d to Is sd, medium to good Is 3-J-d to Is 4d, inferior or musty Is to Is 2Jd (ex store, sacks extra, net). Grass Seeds. —Quotations : For best dressed perennial 3s to 3s 3d, choice 3s 6d to 4s 6d, medium to good 2s 9d to 8s (ex store, sacks extra, net). Potatoes.—Market flat, the demand being confined to requirements for local wants only ; business in consequence is limited, and no prospect of any improvement in price. Quotations : For best Derwents 27s Od to 30s, medium 20s to 25s per ton (ex store, sacks weighed in, net. Dairy Produce. —There is no alteration to note in the position of the market. Transactions ax-e still confined to retail lots for local consumption. Quotations: For best dairy-made salt butter 6d to 7d, medium 4d to sd, factory-made lOd to Is per lb. Factorymade cheese (medium size) nominally 4Jd to 4fd, loaf shape 4Jd to sd, dairy-made 2d to 3£d per lb.
