MATAURA.
The dramatic entertainment on Friday week in Humphries’ Hall was a thorough success. The members of the Dramatic Club who took part in the reproduction of H. I. Byron’s comedy, ‘Not such a Fool as he Looks,’ have every reason to feel gratified with their performance, as to my mind the acting was the best seen in these parts for some time. Our amateurs fairly excelled themselves. An effcient orchestra from the band gave the overture and also played during the intervals.. Thos. Fessey met with a nasty accident on Tuesday evening while in the performance of his duty in the paper mills. While lowering the lift he inadventently looked to see if all was clear, and before' he could withdraw the lift caught him, bruising him on the right side of the head. Dr. Hendry attended to him, and he is moving about not much the worse for his mishap. The monthly meeting of the Gospel Temperance Society was held on Wednesday evening when, as usual, there was a good attendance and a programme of the general order was gone through, consisting of readings, recitations, &c. Our shootists held their customary practice on Wednesday afternoon. Considering the fine day the shooting was anything but good. This is to be accounted for from the fact that they were trying the long ranges and so some or nearly all of them had hardly ever fired at the 500 and 600 yards distances it was not to be expected that large scores would be made, but practice makes perfect; no doubt our boys will make it warm for outsiders yet. A decided improvement in the weather since last week —everybody’s spirits rising in consequence.
