GENERAL NOTES.

On October 20 the largest shipment of butter ever sent from Victoria, 650 tons, was sent Home in the s.s. Valetta.

A trial shipment of 2cwt. of green peas was lately sent from Melbourne in the freezing chambers of the steamer Valetta. Concerning Mr James Tyson, the Australian millionaire, it is related that he kept an account for 25 years of the profit he made out of the progeny of a brindled heifer which he had acquired by swapping a flute. He estimates it at over £70,000. The Southern Standard reports that Mr J. Milne, of Otakarama, lost a young horse through the bot fly the other day. The milk supply at the Matanra factory last Monday was 1,900 gallons. The Melbourne Argus reports that Mr High ton (of the Wallacetown, N.Z., condensed milk factory) has asked the Victorian Minister of Agriculture to give him facilities for establishing a condensed milk factory in Victoria by allowing the machinery and plant to come into the colony free of duty. His reason for desiring to leave New Zealand is that Victoria has a larger population than that colony, and moreover the quantity of milk available here was greater and the supply more regular than in New Zealand, where it was affected by the coldness and duration of the winter. The Glasgow Corporation has decided to erect cold storage for 25,000 carcases, and Mr Black, the Queensland representative, recommends that the buildings be fitted with Nelson’s thawing process.
