MATAURA NOTES.

The second elevens of the Grore and Mataura Cricket Clubs played a match on Saturday. Mataura won by 51 runs. The visitors were unable to make any stand against the home trundlers, and only succeeded in knocking up 28 runs to the home team’s 79. On Monday last Mr Humphries, of the Bridge Hotel, had a rib broken through falling from a horse. He was riding the animal barebacked at the time, when it rather unexpectedly shied, Mr Humphries being unseated. He was, however, able to walk home, and in doing.so called at Hr Hendry’s, where he had his rib fixed up. He then went home as though nothing had happened. You can’t beat the “ old ’uns ” for taking things coolly. A meeting of gentlemen interested in the formation of a Political Club was held on Tuesday evening in Mr Cameron’s hotel. It was well attended, and all present spoke in favor of the idea. A committee was formed to draw up rules, etc., to be submitted at the next meeting, to be held a month hence.

The Mataura Rifle Club opened the season on Wednesday afternoon, when there was a good muster of members. Sides were picked by the captain and lieutenant. Owing to a supply of ammunition not having come to hand from Wellington, only one range (200 yards) was fired at. The captain’s side won by 28 points, the scores being Captain’s side, 158 ; lieutenant’s side, 130. The weather was very good for shooting, there being only a slight wind across the range. The best score was that made by Mr Dempster, who put on 81 out of a possible 35, which is very good considering it is the first of the season.

During the last week we have had one or two very welcome showers, and could do with more yet.
