SPARING THE ROD.

Advocates of whipping, as a means of discipline often quote Solomon as saying, ‘ Spare the rod and spoil the child.’ What Solomon said was, ‘He that spareth the rod hateth his son. But the word 1 rod ’ in that connection does not necessarily refer to corporal punishment. It simply means parental authority and guidance. The same Hebrew word is used in Psalm xxiii, where David says : ‘ The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. His rod and his staff they comfort me.’ The rod was the symbol of authority and power, not a raw hide nor a willow switch.
