The National Mortgage and Agency Co. report of the Invercargill markets on Tuesday as follows: — There was an entry of 41 head of fat cattle forward, and although the competition was not so keen as usual prices were fully maintained. Best bullocks brought up to L 9 10s; ordinary, L 7 10s to L 8 10s; light, L 6 to L 7 5 cows to LS 10s for best, ordinary L 5 10s to L 7. , „ Fat sheep—B69 entered to a very dull market, sales in many cases being made at much below owners’ values. Best heavy weight sheep brought 16s 6d to 18s 2d ; good medium weight wethers, 12s to 14s ; light, 10s to 11s 6d. Store sheep—2624 entered. Market very dull, shortness of grass keeping buyers out of the market. Store Cattle —132 entered, consisting of all kinds. Except for a pen of very choice steers competition was very dull, a great many lots being passed. Large framed 4 and 5 year old bullocks brought L 7 per head; store cows 50s to L 4 10s; 2-year-old heifers, 60s to 70s; yearlings, 30s to 555; calves, 15s to 20s; dairy cows and heifers, L 4 to L 6, but for this latter . class the competition was very limited. Pigs —25 entered. Nice quality porkers brought 355; weaners, 14s. Skin and Fat Sale—A good catalogue in for
Monday’s sale, all lots selling well. Winton sale, Thursday, 4th Oct.—Between 3000 and ' 4000 sheep were forward to the usual monthly sale, three-fourths of which were hoggets. The day being all that could be wished, the sale went off well, every lot being sold. This market is by far the best in Southland, no doubt owing greatly to the superiority of the stock, and also to the fact that the district is closely settled. A large number of sheep that could not be sold at Thornbuiy market at the preceding sale, were disposed off at advances of 2s. and 3s each, and even then the stock were fair value. We succeeded in topping the market with a line of very choice hoggets, bred by Mr John Keith (Racecourse), getting 12s 4d each; other lines at 10s 6d, 10s 3d, 9s Id, 8s lOd, 8s 6d, 8s 3d and 8s Id, while small and inferior were selling at 5s 6d to 7s; fat sheep, in small lots, brought lls 9d to 12s 9d; crossbred ewes and lambs, lls each. The entry of cattle was larger , than usual, but the class was very inferior. Sales were made of dairy cows at L 4 10s to Ijs 10s ; fat steers up to L 6 ; young cattle, 50s to 60s ; yearlings, 26s each. Privately we have sold several lines of .hoggets and store cattle at satisfactory prices.
