SOUTHLAND EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting was attended by Messrs G. Froggatt (acting chairman), Baldey, Matheson, Mac Gibbon, Bain, Lumsden, and McLeod. It was decided to extend the term of the present scholarships for six months. The examinations of 'pupils from the primary schools for free education in the High Schools were fixed to begin on the 19th of December. The following tenders were accepted : —New school at Pyramid siding, J. P. Petersen, £129 10s ; new school at Chatton Hoad, Hamilton and Cruickshanks, £lll ss; new school at Niagara Palls (Waikawa), J. P. Petersen, £149 10s ; repairs and paidting at Chatton school £26 ; ditto at Elderslie, J. B. Aldred, £26 18s ; ditto at Wild Bush, E, Matthews, £l7 4s 3d. It was reported that the following appointments had been made :—Limestone Plains, J. Soar, head teacher; Charlton, J. C. Erison, head teacher; Waimumu, Mary A. J. Wall, head teacher; inspector to supervise erection of Board’s new offices, Peter Walker. Applications for works, etc., at Limestone Plains, Winton, Clifton, Waipounamu, and Gore were granted. It was resolved to constitute a new school district in the Lillburn district (Waiau) to be known as the Clifden district. Several other matters having been dealt with, and accounts amounting to £2300 4s Id passed for payment, the Board adjourned.
