The monthly meeting was attended by Mr T. Green (chairman) and Crs.Hast, McQueen, Fraser, McCallum, Eaymond, Ward, Hamilton, and Dunlop. The following £ for £ subsidies were granted to the Waimumu Boad Board: — Mataura to Bushy Park road, £SO; Gilder’s road, £25 ; Gore to Kelvin road, £SO. The yards of Mrs Jane Daniels, Dipton, were declared a public pound, and Mrs Daniels appointed poundkeeper. Eobert San.ds was appointed poundkeeper at Winton and ranger for Winton and Oreti Bidings. Twenty settlers in the Winton Biding petitioned the Council to have a roadline cut through the bush at Thomson’s Crossing, east of the railway, between blocks 1 and 2, Winton Hundred. —To be attended to when funds avd available.
Tlie Railway Commissioners wrote that they could not see their way, as requested, to reduce the charges made for the haulage of gravel for road-making. The solicitor was instructed to prepare the necessary notice to property-holders in connection with the Wyndham drainage scheme —tenders to be called for the work without further delay. In the course of his report for the halfyear ended 30th June, J. Brown, inspector of slaughter-houses, stated that of late much had been said and written relative to the quality of the meat offered for sale in Invercargill. Ho pointed out that the butchers were very shrewd and careful buyers, quickly detecting any fault in condition or otherwise in stock, and as a matter of fact were most careful in rejecting any animals they were in any way doubtful of, or the condition of which was not satisfactory. Judged by the “ show ” in the butchers’ shops and the general appearance of the stock before slaughter, there was very little fault to be found with the quality of the beef or mutton sold through the butchers’ shops in Invercargill. Six ratepayers in the Winton Riding called attention to the damage being done through the escape of water from the Winton stream
on the road near Mr C. D. Moore’s. —Engineer to report when in the district. Accounts amounting to LlOls 4 3d were passed for payment. Tenders were ordered to be called for a number of works in the Mataura, Hokonui, and Winton Ridings. Mr John Hamyln was appointed inspector of works. Cr. Dunlop, in accordance with notice, moved that steps be taken to erect a toll bar at the north end of the Waihopai bridge—the money obtained to be expended in improving ' the North Road.—Cr. Raymond seconded the motion. —The Chairman read a legal opinion (to the effect that the Council had power to erect the toll bar.—ln speaking to the motion Cr Dunlop stated that the toll bar need not be permanent’— it could be dispensed with when enough money had accrued to maintain the road and bridge.— Cr Raymond said that he had seconded the motion mainly because it provided a means of getting at people who used the road and did not contribute a copper to the County revenue.—The chairman suggested as an alternative proposal the striking of an extra rate on the part of the Awarua Riding.— After further discussion the motion was put and carried, the chairman and Cr Hast voting against it. The Council then adjourned.
