THE INTBRPROVINCIAL TEAM. OUR PRIZE COMPETITION

The competition instituted by the proprietors of the Southern Cross excited a great deal of interest, as was evinced by the fact that 210 coupons were received at the office. A large crowd of interested footballers assembled at Mr Master’s shop on Wednesday evening awaiting the publication of the selection of the Match Committee. This proved to be as follows. Full back: Cockroft (Scar); threequarters: Bain (Star), Donaldson (Star), Hurst (Winton) ; halves ; Guff (Star), D. Mcßobie (Star) ; forwards: Jenkins (Star) and Or. Ramsay (Star); wings, N. Mcßobie (Pirates), Farquharson (Pirates) T. Mulloy (Riverton), Bullman (Riverton), Hughes (Star), Todd (Invercargill), Royds (Gore). Emergencies—backs : Tapper (Pirates), Hawthorn (Star), Rodgers (Pirates) ; forwards: Murphy (Star). An intimation was also given that arrange - ments had been made, to play a return interprovineial match in Dunedin, on a date to be fixed at the end of this month so that another opportunity will be given to those players who are not included in the team to still put forth exurtions to secure interprovincial honors ere the season closes. The team chosen by the Selection Committee appears to have given general satisfaction, and the improvement in the game shown in Wednesdays’ trial match justifies reasonable hopes that the team may score a win against Otago on Wednesday next. With regard to the competition, out of 210 coupons received, six contained the team as selected by the commsttee. The first received and the one which consequently -wins the prize was No. 92 dated Sept. Ist and was sent in by

R. Donaldson, Cast Invercargill.

The following also placed the team correctly : No. 99—Sept. 3, J. Donaldson, East Invercargill. No. 145—Sept. 4—T. Mclnerney (Lewis and Co. No. 156—Sept. 4—J. Saunders (Kingsland and Co.) No, 161—Sept. 4—Geo. Tucker, box 22. No. 173—Sept. 4—J. Crawford, Leet street. Out of the rest of the coupods 22 only erred in one name. It was at first thought advisable to publish the votes attached to the uames of the various players, but as it was evident that the names submitted were based not so much upon the merits of the players as from a desire to gauge the mind of the Selection Committee, it was thought that the figures would be of little or no value. Suffice it to say that what opinion could be gleaned from the competition was far and away in favour of the team as now selected. The coupons came from all parts of the compass, no'lnconsiderable number coming from the Western District, as far as the Waiau. In these days of the suffrage it was not surprising to find three ladies trying their hands, two single and one married. The latter was far astray in her selection, but one of the young ladies only missed the team by one name, and had she not probably allowed her judgment to be biassed by fraternal affection, she might have been successful. The name of one player formed a sad stumbling block to the more youthful competitors, aud many funny attempts were made to-turn it into phonetic English. The club feeling was strongly in evidence, and some competitors wonld hardly have been satisfied unless the whole of the team for whom they “ barrack ” had been selected to represent the province. It only remains for us to congratulate the winner, to wish •“ Our boys ” success and to intimate that we hope shortly to afford our readers another opportunity to exercise their ingenuity and foresight.
