MATAURA NOTES.
[From our own Correspondent.]
Between Friday evening and Monday last we had one of the heaviest falls of snow experienced for some years. In all, fully six inches of snow must have fallen—not bad for the second month of spring, but rather rough on lambs. The football match on Friday between Orepuki and Mataura resulted in a win for the home team by 13 points to 3. In the first spell the home team had the best of the game, the second being more even, the Orepukites having, if anything, the best of it. The visitors were entertained in the evening at a social, which broke up about midnight, after a very enjoyable time had been spent.
The Gospel Temperance Society held its monthly meeting in the Oddfellows Hall, on Wednesday evening, when the usual programme of readings, recitations, and dialogues was given to a-full house. The annual meeting of the Mataura Rifle Club was held in Mr Cameron’s Hotel on Wednesday evening, there being a fair attendance of members. The report and balancesheet submitted by the secretary showed the receipts to be £4l 15s 1 Lad, against expenditure, £4O Is 2d, leaving a balance in hand of £1 14s 9|d. Against this has to be placed accounts owing, of £1 Os 2d, which, when everything is paid, still leaves the Club with a credit balance of 14s 7M—very good, considering it is the first year of its existence. The fol - lowing were elected office-bearers for the year—President, Mr T. Brydone (re-elected) ; Vice-Presidents, Messrs Cameron and MclSab (re-elected), Culling, A. Wyllie, and Dr Hendry ; captain, Mr Jas. Mitchell; lieutenant, Mr George Dempster (re-elected) ; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. S. Shanks, junior (re-elected) ; committee of management, Messrs F. McGowan, Connor, and T. W. MacGo wan; auditors, Messrs Dempster and T. V r . MacGowan | (re-elected). A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the secretary for his services and also for the trouble taken in drawing up the annual report and balancesheet.
