MATAURA.

[From our own Correspondent,] During last week the weather has boen perfect. Certainly the air has been a bit sharp, but otherwise it has been all that could be desired. If everything else were on the same footing things would soon boom. Stagnation in business —everyone complaining. The only tiling of interest has been a two days’ bazaar and gift auction in aid of the Presbyterian Church funds. The first of these came off in Mr Humphries hall on Wednesday, when a moderate number attended during the afternoon. In the evening a much larger number put in an appearance. The Xmas tree appeared to be a special attraction for the young folk (and not a few of the old ones also) and those in charge were kept busy. On looking around the hall I noticed a good display of fancy and other goods suitable for all tastes, and was more than once reminded that there were also young ladies in charge of the different stalls ready to sell their wares. The balance of the goods are to be auctioned to-day, when farm produce such as potatoes, poultry, etc., will be offered.

Our footballers journeyed to Gore last Saturday, and sustained defeat at the hands of the local club by 17 points to nil. The scores would lead one to suppose that Mataura was beaten from the start, but such was not the case, as they had far and away the best of the first spell, and should have scored on more than one occasion had not their forwards been over-anxious. Gore had certainly the best of it in the second spell. Mr Eadie gave satisfaction as referee.
