EQUAL TO THE OCCASION.
The other day a little urchin was brought up to receive punishment for violating the rules of the school. The punishment was to be the old-fash-ioned caning of the hand. His hand happened to be very dirty, and, knowing this, on his way to the master’s desk, he tried to wipe his right band clean on ihe side of his trousers. ‘ Gave me your hand, sir,’ said the master, very sternly* Out went the right hand, partly cleaned. The master looked at it for a moment, and said, ‘ Daniel, if you will find another hand in this schoolroom as filthy as that I will let you off this time.’ Instantly, from behind his back,, came the left hand. ‘ Here it is, sir,’was the reply. ‘ That will do this time,’ said the teacher. * You can take your seat, sir.’
