Meeting’s.
SOUTHLAND COUNTY COUNCIL. Friday, 10th Aug. The monthly meeting was attended by Mr T. Green (chairman) and Crs.Hast, McQueen, Fraser, McCallum, Raymond, Ward, Hamilton, and Dunlop. The Chairman mentioned that Cr. Hast, having learned that nothing derogatory to his action or character had been stated at a recent railway meeting at Waikaia, he had withdrawn his resignation.—Leave to withdraw the resignation was accordingly granted. The treasurer having submitted a statement showing the position of the Council, it was adopted, and a committee, consisting of the Chairman and Crs. Raymond, Hast, and Dunlop appointed to endeavour to obtain more favourable terms in regard to rate of interest on the Council’s overdraft. Subsidies for the destruction of small birds were granted as follows : Oteramika, £8 ; Waikiwi, £4; Wallacetown, £2 10s; Waimumu, £8; Hedgehope, £3; "Wendonside, £2; Waikaia, £2 10s; Otatara, £4; Fortrose, £2 10s ; Wyndham, £3 10s. Applications for the position of ranger and poundkeeper for Winton and Oreti ridings Were further held over till next meeting. The offer of L. Cody to do certain ditch work at Limehills was accepted —the Council’s contribution not to exceed £9. It was decided to inform th North Invercargill Council (who asked the Council to cut the broom on the north side of St. Andrew’s street) that the street is not a county road, and not even a road as defined by the Public Works Act. The Winton River Board intimated that they disclaimed all responsibility and liability with regard to banks and bridges in connection with the Winton creek diversion.—Received. A subsidy of £ for £ to the extent of £lO was granted for a ditch along roadline from West Plains road to the Makarewa river. A report was read from the Engineer re Wyndham drainage works,—Received, copy to be sent to the Chairman of the Wyndham Town Board, and tenders called for the work as soon as the Chairman is satisfied matters are in order. On the motion of Cr, Dunlop, it was decided to ask the Borough Council of Invercargill to remove the trees planted near the offices sometime ago. A report was read from the Finance Committee, recommending that accounts amounting to £Bl6 9s Id be passed for payment; that the salary of A. J. Service, assistant clerk, be increased .by £l2 per annum ; stating that a report re the application for a reduction of slaughtering fees to freezing companies would be made to the September meeting, and that Messrs Weavers’ and Attwood’s application for reduction of rates on buildings formerly used as hotels must, in
view of legal opinion, be declined. —Adopted. The sum of £2O was voted for corduroying the road from Tisbury to Waimatua. A general rate ef three-farthings in the L, and a charitable aid rate of one-eighth of a penny in the L, were ordered to be made—payable on Ist September. On the motion of Cr McQueen it was resolved That this Council considers the Noxious Weeds Bill in its present form is unsuitable to this part of New Zealand, and that in legislating on the subject, power should be left to the county councils or other local bodies to ;decide what w'eeds should be considered as being under the operations of a Noxious Weeds Act. The Council then adjourned to the second week in September.
