The Home Circle

[Conducted by LINDA.]

WHAT’S THE. NEWS ? As soon as father’s had his tea, And after all his work is done, He lights his lamp and says to me—- “ Now, bring the paper, little one.” Then mother wheels his chair around, And this is just the way he sits ; And I don’t make the slightest sound While father reads and mother knits. I wonder what the pipers say To father when he reads at night? You know I only read in play, And father reads the paper right; But when I sit upon the stool To find out what the papers tell, He says next year I’ll go to school And learn to read and write and spell I’m waiting here for father now; The toast is made, the tea is set; And when he comes he’ll kiss my brow And say I am his darling pet. “Has baby mine been good to-day?” He’ll ask when he sits down to tea; And mother with a smile will say—- “ My little one’s been helping me.” He’ll take the chair when tea is done, And wheel it to the fire and say—- “ Now where’s the paper, little one ? Have you been reading it to-day ?” He’ll hold it in his hand like me, I know the very way he sits; And I’ll be still as still can be While father reads and mother knits.
