POULTRY, BIRD, DOG, AND PET SHOW.

The eighth annual show under the auspices of the local Association was held in the Zealandia Hall on Wednesday, and Thursday last. Compared with last year there was a slight falliug off in the number of entries, but that -was compensated by the superior quality noticeable in many classes of the exhibits, which included some fowls quite new down here. The accommodation provided for the poultry this year is a very great improvement on that of the past. The pens which are made of zinc and wire netting, allowed the exhibits to be clearly seen, while the poultry having more light and room, moved about with greater freedom. Two long tables extending almost the full length of the building, were occupied by the poultry pens, there being two rows of pens hack to back upon each t ible, and a bench running along one side of the hall held the pigeons, of which there were over seventy entries, twenty of them belonging to Messrs Smith Bros., of Mosgiel. The majority of the prizes in this section, and also for game poultry (33 entries) were carried off by outside exhibitors, a pretty large number of the entries (335 altogether) coming from beyond Southland. Messrs Aitken and Son (Dunedin) contributed over thirty to the nnmber (includingthe eighteen Polish fowls shown) and secured fifteen first and twelve second prizes. Mr J. Harper (East Invercargill), another large exhibitor, was awarded eight first and seven second prizes out of an entry of over thirty fowls, and Mr John Friend, whose exhibits numbered .forty, took seven firsts and nine seconds. Mr FT. 0. Potts (Lawrence) showed some superior game fowls, and pulled off seven first and six second prizes. Among the poultry, in numbers, the Leghorn predominated, the other kinds being well represented, excepting Andalusian, Houdan, Orpington, and Crossbred*. The principal prize-takers in poultry were ; —Game : Messrs W'. Aitken and Sou, N. O. Potts, Smith Bros.,

Williams (Dunedin), both large exhibitors, and Messrs Shaw and Brey (Gladstone) Avere the most successful. Among the pets there was a good variety, from the active monkey to the mischevious magpie, and this section, though small, received a good deal of attention, especially from the youngsters, some of whom had never before seen a guinea pig or a white rat. , Two splendid Persian cats shown by Mr J. S. Thomson (Balfour) were worth seeing. On Thursday the dogs were judged. There was a capital exhibition, and good competition in the leading classes. The concession in fares made by the raihvay department brought a large number of visitors from the country, and the hall was crowded in the afternoon and evening, the shoAv in this and other respects being highly successful.
