A REMINISCENCE

(to the editor.) Sir, —The name of Archie Davis •occurring in one of “ Grandfather s Yarns,” recalls to mind a curious story concerning him which, in these days of “ spookrsm,” may be interesting. One dark night a man commonly called Cockney Bill, going from Bluff to Toi Tois, was waiting for the ferry boat on the Mataura Beach, opposite Fortrose. While walking about he became conscious that someone was walking with him “ Who are you ?” he asked, but receiving no answer, struck a match and held it in his companion’s face. To his horror he saw that it was Archie Davis, looking as if drowned. His sidelocks (which he wore long to cover his bald pate) hung dripping- on his shoulders. The figure instantly vanished. This gave Cockney Bill a great scare. However, he found Archie Davis all right. Shortly after this they were both crossing the ferry with two other men, when the boat swamped, and Archie Davis was drowned, the three others saving themselves with great difficulty. —I am, etc., An Old Identity.
