So dull, so calm, so slow to more ; Going round and about to prove The things she has long since divined ! You understand your wife ? Not in the longest life! She’ll cause you new surprise Until the day she dies. But she knows what you mean to say, Whilst yet your thoughts are on Ihe way, And has her answer ready too, Based on experience—of you ! Bead your paper. Once in a while Answer her calm domestic smile, But oh, the leagues her fancy ran Since you that paragraph began! She weaves a drama ever new. Its hero is always—a glorified you ! This morning ere you went to town You kissed her, of course, as she brushed you down. l>idjou know you were no more Thomas Brown, But her knight going forth to the dusty fray, And that she would think of you all day, And still pause in her work—to pray ? You think her changeable and rash Because she secs things in a flash. Sees wrong sometimes, and comes to you Some of her rash deeds to undo. What eeeme to you an old romance Still stirs her heart and lights her glance. Take heed, take heed, how you despise The pleading of her wistful eyes 1 JTo» pleaded once, and she was kind: Wow ’tis her turn. Will you be blind ? What if a foolish word she crave ? Have you forgotten how she gave ? What vexes you, can torture her. What pleases you, sets her astir With rapture.
