MATAURA.
(Own Correspondent). Three young children were playing on the banks of the Mataura last Sunday, when one of them, the five-year-old daughter of Mr Cook, fell in and was drowned - The body was recovered next day. A movement is oh foot to establish an athenaeum here, and bids fair to be carried to a successful issue.
The local Literary and Debating Society opened their session on Monday. There was a good mustei’, and the interest shown in the proceedings promises well for the success of the meetings. The Rev, J. M. Davidson was elected president; Mr J. Lowden junr., secretary and treasurer ; Mr J. Lowden sehr., vice-president; and Dr Hendry editor, with a committee of 18. Monday is set apart for the ladies’ night. The local brass band has started sixpenny readings for the purpose of raising funds to pay off the debt on their instruments.
