OREPUKI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Everything is very quiet in Orepuki, except the wind, which has been blowing a whole gale for a week past, accompanied with heavy rain and hail. Fortunately all the grain is stacked, so that with, the exception of the blowing down of a chimney belonging to the Railway hotel, and the smashing in its fall the porch of a fruit shop, no damage has been done. The supply of water has been very welcome, and was badly needed. Work is proceeding apace on the Waiau road, but the weather is all against it. The school at Koromiko is finished and a teacher is being advertised for, so that we may look for the opening of it at an early date. The new school will mean a loss to the Orepuki one of a good many children.

I see the football season has commenced, and onr young fellows are hard at practice. I hear no word of the cricket match with Wyndham, which was to have been the last match for the cup, which our boys are very confident of winning. Some uneasiness is felt at the nonappearance of a prospecting party

who were working their way from Wilson’s river to Orepuki. I £ they are on the road this weather they will have pretty rough times. Large fires were seen near Mussie Beach, hut whether lit by them or not we cannot say.
