The Southern Cross PUBLISHED WEEKLY. Invercargill, Saturday, April 7 TO OUR READERS.
With this issue begins the publication of the second volume of the Southern Cross. The first year of any enterprise, notably that of a newspaper, is proverbially difficult. Our case has been no exception; but apart from this we have been agreeably surprised at the welcome which our journalistic venture has received from the people of the district. It now finds its way into many households in Invercargill and Southland, and has a large and steadily-increasing circulation-—a circulation surpassing, we believe, that of any other weekly printed in the district. We have not been able to give effect to all our wishes in respect to the paper, but hope to gradually introduce improvements that will make it even more worthy of support than hitherto. The serial story now , running through, our columns will be followed by others of equal, if not greater interest; the pictorial department will also receive attention, and subscribers may rely that no effort will be wanting to make the pioneer penny weekly of Southland worthy of general patronage.
Our very best thanks are due to the business men of the town and district for the generous support they have accorded us during the past year, and particularly to those public bodies and departments which have given us a share of their advertising and jobbing work. Fairer treament than this none could desire or expect. We may be excused on such an occasion as this for remarking that now the experimental stage has been passed, the paper is rapidly increasing in usefulness as an advertising medium.
Encouraged by the success which has thus far attended the experiment —the daring one, as some thought it ■ —of issuing a weekly journal at a penny, we begin another year in cheerful mood, and with the firm conviction that still brighter days are in store for Southland and its Southern Cross.
