A posthumous' anecdote of the immortal Tartarin is repeated by the- “ Caulois.” It was in the gun-room,, and Tartarin, after regaling his audience with various thrilling tales of his exploits and adventures in the case, described a horrific experience. “ The other day,” he said, “in a fearful snowstorm, I found myself, without a gun or any weapon, face toface with three wolves.” “ Well, what : did you do ? “ Well, I simply stared at them with my hands in my pockets, and whistled.” “ Do 3'ou mean to say they didn’tattack you ?” “ They couldn’t; they were in a cage.” ’
