LIFE IN AMERICA.
to THE EDITOR. Sir, —My opinions regarding the fair sex in America having been criticised by your contributor “ Yox,” 1 mentioned the matter to a gentleman in town, and he kindly gave me the following letter for publication. Yours, &c., W. H. Mathieson. Following is the letter : “ Dear Sir, —You ask me if I think America is in advance of this country in morality. I must say, having lived there for a year and a half, that I formed very similar opinions to yourself. St. Paul says “ The love of money is the root of all evil,” and this form of selfishness seemed to me far more developed there than in any other land I visited —and where have I not been ? I cannot say I admired American women. They seemed destitute of good looks and good manners. The frequency of divorce shows domestic happiness is a failure. Lynch law shows justice is doubtful. The murders of public men —Lincoln, Garfield, and the Mayor of Chicago, &c. — are too common ; and, to add to all, the population is fast decreasing.”
