KEN LEWIS.

CHAMPIOU BICYCLIST OP UEW ZDS^.X J^3^TZD.

Ken Lewis holds the I, and 10-mile records ; and h, 3, and 5mile championships, cn his “ Star ” racer. Pour years ago, at the age of seventeen, this, to-day champion -of the wheel in New Zealand, crossed the saddle of a bicycle, and commenced his career hy winning no less than £42 in sovs., and securing a second place in the Great Austral Race of £2OO. Year after year he competed at race meets in Australia, his prize-money araOuntingtoover£2oo. His last race was contested in South Aus-tralia—3-mile handicap for 20 sovs. This he won, which closed his Australian racir s’ O career.

Before leaving- for Yew Zealand he wheeled a mile in two minutes twenty-four seconds on the Adelaide Oval "which was record time, although not officially cronicled. Me fell a victim to the fever, and, on recovering’, decided that a change of climate would be beneficial. He sailed for Yew Zealand under an engagement to the firm of Adams, Curtis, and Co., as a mechanic and cycle worker. On his arrival here be commenced to train for a meeting at Oamaru. He competed there with a fixed determination but failed to secure honours. He admitted then that the Yew Zealand men were then too good, but he expressed the hope that some day he would meet them in good health, and jig again the distances. Record-breaking fills up the space between his appearance at Oamaru, Ashburton, and Christchurch. The 10-mile Australasian record proved that Hen Lewis was no novice on a wheel, and passing to the mile record oj 2 min. 23 4-sth sec, and the half-mile proved beyond question that he is a rider of the first order, and, at least, quite equal to any man in Yew Zealand. At Ashburton, early in December, the five-mile championship was annexed, and from this onward honors have been added race after race. To the Christchurch meet we now trend, and there was nothing to touch the dash of the Australian, consequently the 2-mi!e championship, half and 3-mi!e were easily won, besides other handi cap events. Iven Lewis is a Cash Amateur and a member of the C'.C.C.—The Y.Z. Wheelman.
