* GORE
Tlie last week lias been one of ordinary normal conditions, except in respect of that last resource of “your own’’—the weather, which has been dealt out in penny numbers, and very much mixed at that. The Heller Company’s performance is the last source of wonder, especially to yours truly, who wondered where all the simpletons came from to swallow Heller's mixture. It is a clever entertainment, and so is the threecard trick clever, but the sight of all the serious faces at certain parts of the programme suggests a variety of thoughts, mostly embodied in the source of wonder aforesaidOn Wednesday a cricket match was played by Gore and Mandeville, and was won by Gore—lo 9 to Mandeville’s 2S, Hartley contributing 4-2 of the former score. Mandeville played on till dark, and to gnage by their performance a double innings would have made a difference in the final result. The Rev. Father Newport leaves Gore today for Port Chalmers, and the concern displayed by his parishioners at his removal speaks volumes for the esteem in which he is held. The crops in our district are well up to the average in appearance, and are already beginning to fall under the march of the victorious reaper and binder—maker’s name included on payment of one guinea.
