The late Dr. Jeffeiy used to be a marked figure in the streets of Glasgow. A buirdly man, with striking features and long hair that curled A ringlets to his shoulders, no one once liaving seen him could forget him. Passing through the Saltmarket, he -was accosted one day by a little street gamin with a very dirty face with Shine your boots, sir?” The little fellow was very importunate, and Dr. Jeffery, being impressed with the unwashed state of the boy’s face, said, "“■X dont want a shine, but if you go and w r ash your face I’ll give you a Tourpenny piece. ’’ “ A’rigbt, sir, was the boy’s reply. “ Will you let me -see you do it ?” The boy wmnt to one of the drinking-fountains and .made his ablutions. On his return
the minister said, “ Well, sir, you’ve earned your money ; here it is.” “ I dinna want your money, old chappie,” said the boy. /Keep it yoursel’ an’ get 3’er hair cut.”
