Country News

VIIfTOK Much, disappointment was caused here last Thursday in consequence of no sheep sale being 1 held. Certainly the auctioneers have subjected themselves to very severe rebuke at the hands of those who travelled long distances with their sheep and stock. One individual went the length of saying he would see into the matter. Ail this worry and trouble could have been saved had the once, twice, third and last time folks (it is to be hoped this will be the last time such an unpardonable mistake will occur) put a short notice in the papers stating particulars of postponement, when to be held, etc.

Mr J. Cowie has definitely decided to allow himself to be nominated as a candidate for the Southland Education Board. Mr Cowie has a strong claim to the position, having been for close on twenty years a member of our local school committee, and the time has arrived when more direct country representatives should sit at the Board. It therefore behoves country committees to return men who will see justice done to country schools, and to education generally, A lai-ge number of our people have settled down to their different callings again after the holidays. A number left by the tug Awarua last Wednesday for Stewart Island. About a baker’s dozen left here on Thursday evening and purpose visiting Patterson’s Inlet and other nooks and corners of Steward Island. They intend chartering a boat, and will remain away for fully a fortnight. They took with them rations, tents, etc., and are determined that neither the fish nor the mosquitos shall have a bite out of them, for they have taken precautions to cope with both. Quite right, and I hope they will enjoy themselves, and return with increased vigor to ordinary life.
