WOODLANDS.

Mr I. Von Tunzelmann, after having been 11 f years head teacher in the Woodlands district, has - decided to shift camp and take up his quarters at Stewart Island. After the distribution of rewards to his scholars on Monday night he was presented by the chairman of the School Committee with a framed testimonial, which, without remark, indicates how well his services in the past were valued and his gentlemanly characteristics esteemed. It reads : Dear Sir, — On the occasion of your voluntary retirement from the head mastership of the Woodlands school, the committee desire to place on record the appreciation in which your services were held while occupying that position. You entered on your duties in May, 1882, and retired in December. 1893, a period of over 11|- years, and during that time you have done all you could for the advancement of education in the distract. As librarian of the Woodlands Library you have acted in a very agreeable mariner, and in this respect too much jrraise cannot be given. In the Sunday School you have also taken a warm interest for a number of years, acting as one of the teachers with acceptance to the parents of the children attending. In leaving for new sphere of labour the committee heartily wish you success and bid you God-speed.—John Gohl (chairman), Chas. For the above evidence of appreciation, and in acknowledgement of a present of a lamp from the children, and a silver teapot for Mrs Von Tnnzelman, from an unknown friend. Mr Von Tunzelman returned fitting thanks, and expressed pleasure in knowing that his efforts had been valued so highly. At the break up of the school prizes were given to the following - pupils, all of whom had passed in their respective standards at the last examination : —E. Taylor, F. Von Tunzelmann, D. Lamont, E. Von Tunzelmann, B. Linklater, H. Dewe, C. Gohl, W. Wyeth, fJ. McKendry, W. Waddell, B. Swale, M. Alexander, G. Mathieson, J. Mathieson. J. Branks, T. Swale, W. Alexander, R. Wyeth, A. Gohl, M. Waddell, A.. Branks, J. Swale, D. Milne, H. Forbes, A. Von Tunzelmann, G. Dawson, and J. Von Tunzelmann. To those who failed to pass, who had joined since the inspector’s report, and to the infant classes gifts were also given. The ninth annual • concert of the local branch of the Blue Ribbon Army was held on the loth inst. Mr G. Dawson presided, and delivered an address, the other speakers being Mr McCaw and the Rev. Mr Wool lass. During the evening vocal selections were given by Misses A. McKay, Mackie, E. Dawson and Mrs Hopkins, and Messrs J. Clay, C. Kerr, Hopkins, and Bxyan, and McCaw. Readings were given by Messrs Von Tunzelmann and Knipe. Miss L. Dawson contributed a piano selection, and Misses A. Mackie, Dawson, and McKa} r acted as accompanists.
