BLUFF.

Owing to the popularity o£ the Hon. the member for Awarua, we are denied the excitement of a Parliamentary election, and have to content ourselves with the minor and purely local electioneering contests for mayor and councillors. The election of mayor takes place on the 29th iust., and it is said there will be more than one llichmond in the field. . A shooting match between civilians and members of the Bluff Is avals was fired last Tuesday, resulting rather unexpectedly in an easy win for the civilians. Last Wednesday was observed as a close holiday, but it rained even more continuously than on the 9th. At one time in the early morning the road in places was completely •submerged. Tlie cricket match between second elevens from the I.C.C. and the local Club, which has been postponed from time to time owing to unfavourable weather, is now fixed for next Wednesday on the Bluff ground. The sculling dingy race, of which previous intimation was given, between Palamountain mid the veteran Boniface for the championship of N.Z., and £25 a-side, was rowed on Monday in the presence of a largo number of spectators. The day was very suitable, there being no wind and the water beautifully smooth. The men were started by Mr W. L. Gray punctually at the hour named. Boniface made the best start, and secured a lead, which he maintained till rounding the distance flag, when Palamountain, who-had been rowing a race, shot to the front, and remained there to the finish, winning very comfortably by about two lengths. Circumstances favoured Boniface winning, and lie also had the best boat. He admits, however, being fairly beaten. Palamountain rowed under the disadvantage of overweight and a badly trimmed boat, but superior merit more than balanced this handicap. The following is his record up to date—s 3

races ; 38 wins ; placed second seven times ; third, three times, and unplaced five times. The first wool of the season came to hand during the week. Considering the very unsettled weather lately, this is much sooner than we expected.?
