DR. HODGKINSON and WOMEN VOTERS.
The writer of the following lines asks us to “ excuse this knock at meu, and publish it for one man’s sake, that is Dr Hodgkinson, who has hunted the Bible over to put us down for the last three weeks m the Weekly Times.” Our own dear Dr Hodgkinson, Just kindly read this through, Then to women’s rising rights Be gentle, just and true. You always point us to St. Paul, Who lets the ladies down, And says that we were only made for man, To be his glory and his crown, And would not suffer us to speak In church or public hall, Because our mother Eve, he says, was most to blame In bringing on the Fall. Yet, Dr dear, to us could you make it clear From whom Paul got the power to say That woman’s place is simply this— Fear man—him honour and obey. For the great Master whom Paul served at last To her was ever kind, And honoured her to be her son When he for all men’s fallen race His throne in heaven resigned. And when he rose triumphant from the grave To wTiom did he first appear P Hot to a man, but Mary, who by his grave stood near; And kindly called her by her name, That she the Lord might know. Then, with His first message from the dead to men He honoured her to go—‘‘Go tell my brethren,” He said, “that you the Lord did see, And before that I ascend on high will go before you into Galilee.” But did the favoured men believe the truth which Mary told? Ho! Who did Christ on Emmaus road reprove as poor in faith, and tools ? The women never heard Christ’s words in pain. And never were reproved by Him as were the men : Did Peter not his Lord deny, and Judas with a kiss betray ? How glad to say we are not men, Although for our sex some load us with reproach and p-ain. Now, Dr dear, we ladies all Ask you to tell us more of the Master— Less of Paul. We have it in our Blessed Saviour’s own record — “ The servant is not greater than his Lord ” A Country Girt.
