LIEUTENANT INNES.
Mr J. W. Innes’ connection with volunteering dates from 1878. In August of that year he joined B. Battery, 2nd Brigade, N.Z.R.A.Y., Dunedin, and went through the various grades of non-com-rank gradually. In May, 1886, he was elected lieutenant of the corps. lie took an active part in the shooting competitions, and strongly advocated the entering of men for local and N.Z. Rifle Association meetings. He set a practical example in this respect, being the highest scorer in the Ladies’ Challenge Shield team match, fired at Dunedin a few years ago. In October, 1890, Lieut. Innes came to Invercargill, and was transferred to G. Battery, with which he is at present connected. Lieut. Innes has frequently held the position of delegate for his company at the meetings of the Otago Rifle Association, and continues to take a keen interest in every department of volunteer work, which, he regards as a capital training for young men.
