The Southern Cross. PUBLISHED WEEKLY. Invercargill, Saturday, Oct. 28.

The ratepayers of the Southland County Council are once more, after an interval of three years, engaged in the selection of representatives for the ensuing triennial period. The nomination of candidates, in the majority of the ridings, takes place next week. One of the exceptions is the Toi Tois Riding, where the nominations were held yesterday. We had not heard the result at the time of writing, but it was understood that the sitting member (Mr I. W. Raymond) would be returned unopposed. It is understood that the same experience awaits Cr. McCallum (Waihopai Riding), who has twelve years of good service to his credit. All the other members, it appears, will have to fight for their seats. It is said that Mr A. Baldejq who has represented the Wallacetown Riding continuously since the establishment of the County system in 1876—a record that is probably equalled by few public men in the colonies—will be opposed by Mr Lachlan Fraser. The energetic representative of the Oreti Riding (Mr Ward), is to have two opponents, while the genial chairman of the Council (Mr T. Green) will also have to buckle on his armour for the fray, Mr Keir having declared himself a candidate for office. For Avvarua Mr Fleming will be confronted by a former member in the person of Mr A. Dunlop, while Mr McQueen is in the same position in Mataura, his rival being Mr T. Mac Gibbon. For Waikaia the Restor of the Council (Cr. Hast) will be run by Mr J. Maher. There remains only the Winton Riding. At the last election there was a keenly contested struggle between Messrs Gerrard and J. Hamilton, the result being a tie. The returning officer gave his casting vote for Mr Gerrard. That gentleman has decided not to seek re-election and Mr Hamilton is to have a walk-over. He is one of our oldest settlers, and did good service on the old Makai-ewa Road Board, is well versed in local road works and requirements, and will made in every respect a thoroughly capable member.
