SOUTH HILLEND.
One of the most successful entertainments that has taken place at South Hillend for some time back was held there last Wednesday evening. Mr H. Shepard, the schoolmaster there, is the right man in the right place for getting up such affairs. The rendering of recitations, songs, solos, duets, and trios by his past and present pupils, and the histronic ability of some, were quite a treat to hear. Mr Kean was in the chair, and pushed through the extensive and varied programme vigorously. A contingent of lady and gentlemen vocalists from Winton was present, and added materially to the bill of fare submitted. These consisted of Dr Riley, Mr Brown, and Mr T. Steven, the well known, elocutionist. This gentleman gave two of his best Scottish readings, and also (for the first time in public) a song. Messrs T. and J. McWilliam were also contributors, as were the Misses McAlister, Q-ilmour, and Lea. The Wintonites acquitted themselves well, and Mrs Shepard entertained them prior to their return. Mr McMurtie gave a song and Mr D. Sheehan lost a little elbow grease in art Irish jig and hornpipe. A laughable negro farce by a number of local amateurs brought the programme to a close. In order to meet the requirements of all a dance followed, and it is needless to say was well patronised, and kept up till old Sol arose from beneath, the horizon.
