WINTON.

One of the most successful concerts given here for some time took place on Tuesday night under the auspices of the local Good Templars. It was their first attempt in this line, and was in every respect creditable to them. The programme included no fewer than 22 items. The string band under Mr Norris was in evidence during the evening, and rendered good service. Songs were given by Misses Mcllwrick and Hishon, and MessrsHagerty,Brown, Northcote, McDonali and Gray; a reading by Mr M. O’Brien z a cornet solo and sailor’s hornpipe by Mr D. Hurst; a violin solo by Mr W. Nicol; a» clarionette duett by Messrs Brown and Lillicrap, and a solo on the same instrument by the latter, while a glee party numbering ten good voices sang “ Jack and Jill” with good effect. A newly organised body entitled “ The Pinch Family of Bellringers” also acquitted themselves creditably. The programme closed with a farce entitled, “ The Area Belle,” in which the parts were creditably filled by the Misses Macalister and Liddell, and Messrs Coop, Wilson, and. Graham. The accompaniments were well played by Mrs Gilmour, and Misses B. Gilmour and Mclnerney. Mr H. Fowler made a good chairman. It is desired to obtain a piano for the lodge, and the proceeds of the concert —probably about L 15 — with the money in hand, will go a good way towards its cost. We are apparently not to have a contest, for our electoral district, Awarua, and the ladies will therefore not be able to exercise, the franchise for some time, possibly three years. Humour has it that one young lady nas been approached to allow herself to be nominated so as to make a fight for it, but her reply has not yet been made public. It is to be regretted that Mr Gerrard cannot see his way to stand again as a councillor in the County Council, as undoubtedly he has during his term of office met many a much felt want in various districts, especially in the back localities. Mr Jno. Hamilton, as far as I can learn, is the only man in the Held.
