OREPUKI. “Coming events cast their shadows before them.” This is true of the ensuing struggle for j a diamentary honours, and already speculation is rife as to who is to be our man. Were it not for the new factor (women’s franchise) which will operate so largely at the impending elections, one would be pretty safe to’ plank for the sitting member, but probably the ladies will get slightly mixed. I see that delegates from all parts of Wallace are to meet in Riverton to arrange for combined action in bringing forward and supporting such a candidate as will most efficiently represent the district, but as yet I hear of no delegate going from here. The Orepuki Mining Association is now a firmly established, and a real live institution. Last Saturday it met for the first time, and after some routine business, discussed the residence area question. The secretary was instructed to write to Warden Eawson asking him to grant no more such areas, as they, would interfere with the progress of mining in this district. It w T as also decided that at next meeting, the question of being more fully represent id in the County Council should be considered. I see that at the last meeting of the Wallace County Council several sums of money have been voted for very necessary works in Orepuki and Waiau, which will gladden the hearts of the settlers, who have had very rough times in travelling all winter. The cricketing season has commenced here. The local men are busy at practice, and are hopeful of doing great things this year. The dairy factory is finished, but I have not heard when milk will be taken in. The weather is simply splendid, and vegetation of all kinds is growing luxuriantly. Oct. 18.
