An example of deterioration in values is shown in the sale of the Great Eastern for less than £25,000. The original cost of the vessel was three quarters of a million, hut she was a gigiantic failure from the start. The building of this ship, however, was of value in demonstrating that there was a limit in steamships in the direction of size. She has been of use also in the laying of the Atlantic cables. While those who invested their money in building this ship lost heavily in the venture, they can console themselves with the fact that their loss was not altogether in vain.
