OREPUKI. Spring has set in in real earnest, but last week we had a sample of what New Zealand can do in the weather line. We had hail, rain, and, at the wind up, a fall of snow, which, it i« be hoped, finishes up the winter. Our Mutual Improvement Society closed j for the season last Monday night with a social, consisting of songs, readings, and recitations, a very enjoyable evening being spent. On the whole the season has been a very successful one, and productive of much good to the young folks who have taken part in it. A public meeting was held in the hall last Saturday to lake steps to form a mining association. There were not very many present, but a good working committee was elected to take the matter in hand, and canvass the district for members. Tb# officers appointed arc—Mr Johnston (chairman), Mr O. Eeichel (treasurer), and Mr J. Evans (secretary). ihe want of such an association has often been felt here, and it is highly desirable that all miners in Orepuki should do their best to make the thing a success. The female franchise has caught on here properly, and I think that nearly every woman entitled to the privilege has enrolled, and means to go on the warpath by and by. 4th Oct.
