WIRTOR DISTRICT ROTES. ’ The coming event here is the brass band’s bazaar. Everybody is working to promote its success, and from what I can hear it will be the biggest affair of the kind ever held in the district. It is to be hoped that in the coming summer the band will give the public a little more music in the way of open-air playing than they have been in the habit of doing. The Hokonui coal miners gave a musical •entertainment for a deserving purpose in the Exchange Hall on Saturday night. They played to a full house, and kept the boards for three hours, acquitting themselves admirably in song, joke, and farce. The Oreti Quadrille Assembly closed for the season on the 22nd inst., when a ball, attended by about forty couples, was given. Several of those present contributed songs, and Mr McLeod, who acted as M.C., danced a sailor’s hornpipe in good style. Mr Jamieson catered, and Messrs Hegarty and Findlay proved good musicians, it is understood that the young people think of building a hall in readiness for next season. Perhaps some of the “ oldsters ” will lend them a helping hand. Another quadrille assembly, that of Forest Hill, also closed last week, after a very successful season, with a ball at which about fifty couples were present. 'Mr Mcßae was M.C., and Messrs Horns and Brown the musicians.
