TEMPERANCE CONVENTION AT GORE.

PREPARING FOR THE ELECTION. A most successful convention of temperance workers was held on Wednesday afternoon, when there were present 63 delegates representing 28 societies. The president of the Gore Gospel Temperance Society (Mr John Mac Gibbon) presided. A paper was read by Mr Whitefield (Tapanui), on “What, can be done to make the different Temperance Societies more effective for work.” Mr T. Ayson, Wyndham, also contributed one on “Temperance work-in the coming elections.” Roth subjects were treated on a very exhaustive manner, and ably discussed by a large number of the delegates. A soiree was held in the Town Hall in the evening, when there was a crowded house. After the tea a procession was formed and marched through the main streets, back to the hall, where a public meeting took place. A choir numbering about 40 voices under Mr G. Rrett rendered some capital anthems. Some good addresses were delivered and a most successful gathering closed at 10. 30. A meeting of the Convention was held on Thursday morning, when it was decided to form a council to be called “The United Temperance Council,” comprising of one delegate from each Society at the conference, except Invercargill, quarterly at Gore. An executive was appointed, consisting of Messrs John Mac Gibbon, (President); T. Ayson and J. Raker, (Vice Presidents) ; J. A. Forbes, (Secretary) ; and W. A. Mac Caw (Whip). The executive was instructed to prepare test questions to be submitted to the Candidates for the Mataura electorate. Candidates’ answers to be handed in.writing—A full meeting of the executive to be held on 17th October, to consider same, and decide a future course of action.
