Captain Kerr, of the Salvation Army, was conveyed to gaol on Saturday in default of payment of a line of £3 for a breach of the Milton by-laws. Much sympathy was felt here for the captain, who has made himself -very popular, and not a few expressed a desire to pay the fine. Much surprise was felt at the sentence being carried out after the Premier’s telegram to the effect that the by-law was ultra vires, but the Government afterwards recommended the Governor to ■exercise his clemency, and Captain Kerr was released. He returned to Gore on Tuesday, and received from his comrades a great hallelujah welcome.
