GORE.
A very serious fire took plc.ce at the end of last week at the farm of Mr Andrew Martin, near Gore, when a six-stalled stable, Id-stalled cowshed, and loose-box, containing a iarge quantity of feed oats and ryegrass, were destroyed. Tiie outbreak would appear to have been the result of a spark from a fire which was being used to heat branding-irons. The loss will be very heavy, the property being uninsured. After being closed for six weeks, owing to the measles epidemic, the Gore and Gordon schools re-opened on Monday. The traffic bridge question is still calling forth considerable discussion. A meeting of settlors was held in the Town Hall on Saturday, when there was a large number present to further consider what steps could be taken to assist in having it pushed on. After discussion it was resolved—“ That the County Council be requested to grant a sum of £S(JU towards the erection of a traffic bridge in Gore, such sum to be in two instalments of £250, payable in two successive years.” A further motion was carried by a large majority—“ That the Gore Ihirough Council take the necessary steps to bring the matter before tlie County Council.” The weather this week has been very
changeable. In the early part we were favoured with a taste of spring, and all were making preparations to put gardens in order when a sudden change took place, the warm, sunshine of Wednesday being succeeded by rain, hail and snow on Thursday.
