CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS.

The following is a summary of the business done at the Addington sale yards on August 2nd —Generally speaking the market was a poor one, and the business done, except in fat cattle, was anything but brisk. The entries comprised 5877 sheep, 320 head of cattle and 327 pigs. The demand for store sheep was very poor, the only lines meeting with a ready sale being a few good crossbred ewes close on lambing, and some forward hoggets. Fat sheep were poor in quality and in quantity, and most of those offered were merinos and half fat crossbreds. For best sheep only there was a ready demand. A few of this year’s lambs were entered and met with a ready sale. Prime fat cattle sold well, but a number of half-finished beasts remained unsold. Useful your.g cattle were disposed of at fairly remunerative prices, but little was done in dairy cows. The pigs entered consisted of small porkers and stores, for which the demand was small. Good baconers, however, sold very well. The sale on the whole showed a want of life, and keen competition was almost nil. Considering that this was the market before the Grand National Steeplechase meeting, the poorness of the sale was the more remarkable.
