Humour
MARY PAID THEM BACK. On April Pool’s Day, tlie manager of a certain shop in a midland town, along with the assistants, decided to play a lark on Mary, the cook of the establishment, who was unable to read or write. They wrote on a paper, “ April Poole’ day,” and gave it to Mary along with sixpence, and told her to go across to the chemist and. get sixpenny worth. The chemist’s assistant told her they were out of it, hut she would get it at the next shop higher up the street. The second one asked her if she could read, and on being auswered in the negative, told her what was written on the paper. She took hack the money and told the manager she could not get it anywhere, but gave them no idea that she had discovered the trick. All pa,ssed off well during the day, the fellows enjoying the lark they had had with Mary, About half an hour before closing time she came down to the manager, told him that supper was ready and the table laid, but begged to be excused remaining till they had finished, as she had a bad headache. She was allowed to go to bed; and on the men sitting down to supper, when the cover was taken off the dish, there was nothing but the paper they had given her in the morning with the words on it, “ April Pools’ Day.” Their discomfiture can be better imagined than described.
