PATTI AND MELBA. In a recent interview with Madame Sterling- in Auckland, the reporter remarked—“ Some enthusiastic Australians maintain that Melba is equal to it not better than Patti, as she is.” Madame laughed. “ That,” she said, “is absurd—ridiculous. Melba is very good, but there is only one Patti, and there will never be another. .Melba has • wonderful execution, but-compared-to Patti—why, as I said at first,.its .'ridiculous. Patti is the only operatic star who can raise her prices and still .not lose money for her imprcssario.h The demand for Patti is never at an "end ; she is now gettingdß 1,200 a night when she sings, and we vocalists know that stories of Melba getting- £BOO ai.-e untrue and impossible. Albani tried to raise her prices some time ago. but quickly lost money for her agent.” '
