MATAURA.
On Saturday night the Mataura Football Club held a special general meeting in Cameron’s hotel. The president (Mr H. Cameron) in the chair. Mr T. Smith moved, and Mr A. Clark seconded—That out of respect for the memory of the late Mr Masson the Club cancel their engagements f*rthe season. Mr Smith also moved that the secretary draft a letter to Mr Culling expressing the Club’s sincere rogret at the untimely end of Mr Masson, and their sympathy with his friends and relatives, Both motions were carried unanimously. On Saturday afternoon some.of the local footballers were highly amused by seeing a prominent member of the second fifteen with a nice new cradle on his shoulder. He will have less time for football now. The weekly meeting of the debating society took place on Tuesday night. The editor of the magazine (Mr Brugh) read an editorial with a humorous original poem—a kind of soliloquoy on the hardships of his position. The magazine contained a paper entited “ Passing Notes,” a review of the work done by the Society, which was criticised by several members. “ Evolution,” a paper predicting the future form of the football barracker, which caused a great deal of discussion ; also, a paper on “ The evils of war,” which was freely criticised. During the evening a selection was played by Miss Shanks, with recitations by Messrs Lowden and W. McLeod, and a duet by .Misses Crofts and M. Cameron. Mr Smith has disposed of his drapery business to the London Drapery Co., of Invercargill.| Mataura is to be connected by telephone with Gore and Invercargill.
